Chinese Tong Wars in New York

Originating in 17th century China, the Tongs were the benevolent protective associations that were formed in the United States of America from a politico-religious organization. Consequently, the series of violent conflicts that took place in the late 19th century between Chinese Tong factions based in the Chinatowns of various American cities have been referred to as the China Tong Wars. Now, in 1924, the Tong Wars in major American cities including New York are getting worse with their leaders trying to get machine guns. It has also resulted in many unsolved murders in the Chinese community.

Graf Zeppelin completes transatlantic flight from Europe to America

On October 11, 1928, the rigid airship Graf Zeppelin took off from Friedrichshafen, making its first-ever commercial passenger flight across the Atlantic. So it was on this day in 1928 that he landed in Lakehurst, New Jersey after flying 111 hours and 44 minutes. Graf Zeppelin carried 40 crew members and 20 passengers.

It is today in 1940, that the American comedy of Charlie Chaplin entitled the great dictator created in Turkey and New York. Considered Charlie’s most successful film at the box office, the great dictator satirizes Adolf Hitler and Nazism and condemns anti-Semitism. In the film, Charlie tried out for the dual role.

The Great Storm of 1987 hits the UK

On this day in 1987, several parts of the UK were devastated by a powerful storm. Winds blowing up to 160 km/h claimed the lives of 18 people. As the country has seen massive devastation, an estimated 15 million trees have been felled, many roads and railways have been blocked causing major transport delays. Not only that, but several trees also cut power and telephone lines, leaving thousands of people stranded in homes without power for more than 24 hours.
